Early life and career

Henry Gallant was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on May 15, 1914. He joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1931 and served in a variety of ships before the outbreak of the Second World War.

In 1939, Gallant was appointed to the command of the destroyer HMCS Assiniboine. He led the ship in a number of successful operations against German U-boats in the North Atlantic.

The sinking of the Bismarck

In May 1941, Gallant was appointed to the command of the cruiser HMCS Uganda. The Uganda was part of a task force that was sent to intercept the German battleship Bismarck, which had just sunk the British battleship HMS Hood.

On May 27, 1941, the Uganda encountered the Bismarck and engaged in a fierce gun battle. The Uganda was damaged in the battle, but Gallant and his crew managed to inflict serious damage on the Bismarck.

The Bismarck was eventually sunk by a British torpedo attack. Gallant's actions during the battle earned him the Distinguished Service Order.

Later career

After the sinking of the Bismarck, Gallant continued to serve in the Royal Canadian Navy. He commanded a number of ships and held a variety of shore appointments.

In 1957, Gallant was promoted to the rank of rear admiral. He retired from the Navy in 1962.

Legacy

Rear Admiral Henry Gallant was one of Canada's most distinguished naval officers. He was a skilled and courageous leader who played a key role in the Allied victory in the Second World War.

Gallant's legacy continues to inspire Canadian sailors. His name is borne by the Canadian frigate HMCS Gallant.
