John Bubbles was born John William Sublett on February 20, 1902, in Louisville, Kentucky. He began dancing as a child, and by the age of 15 he was performing professionally in vaudeville. In the 1920s, Bubbles became one of the most popular African-American entertainers in the country. He starred in several Broadway musicals, including "Shuffle Along" and "Blackbirds of 1928." He also appeared in several films, including "The Cotton Club" and "Stormy Weather." In the 1930s, Bubbles began to focus more on his comedic talents. He became a regular on the radio show "The Fleischer Show," and he also starred in several comedy films. In the 1940s, Bubbles began to slow down his performing career. He made occasional appearances on television and in nightclubs, but he mostly focused on teaching and mentoring young dancers. John Bubbles died on February 19, 1986, in New York City.
