Plot
The novel begins in the aftermath of the Wild Card virus outbreak, which has left a small percentage of the population with superpowers. These individuals are known as Aces, and they are feared and mistrusted by the general population. The novel follows the stories of several different Aces as they try to find their place in a world that is both fascinated and terrified of them.
One of the main characters in the novel is Fortunato "Fort" Apache, a young man who develops the power to control fire. Fort is a kind and compassionate person, but he is also haunted by the memories of his past. He is determined to use his powers to help others, but he is also aware of the dangers that come with being an Ace.
Another main character in the novel is Dr. Tachyon, a brilliant scientist who develops the power to teleport. Tachyon is a driven and ambitious man, but he is also willing to sacrifice anything to achieve his goals. He is determined to find a cure for the Wild Card virus, but he is also aware that his research could have dangerous consequences.
The novel also follows the stories of several other Aces, including Jenny "Golden Boy" Cates, a young woman who develops the power to control metal; Dr. Jay Ackroyd, a brilliant scientist who develops the power to create illusions; and Darnell "Hole in the Ground" Bell, a young man who develops the power to burrow through the earth.
