Commander Henry (Harry) Gallant was born on December 16, 1918, in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. He was of Mi'kmaq descent and was the son of a fisherman. Gallant's early life was marked by poverty and discrimination. Undeterred, he joined the Canadian military in 1940, eager to serve his country and prove himself.

Gallant quickly distinguished himself as a skilled and courageous soldier. He was part of the First Special Service Force, an elite joint Canadian-American unit that fought in Europe during World War II.

For his actions on D-Day, Gallant was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO),one of the highest military honors in the British Commonwealth. He was also promoted to the rank of Major.
